According to a CBS poll, 92% of the American people approved of President Obama’s State of the Union address. Given his poor ratings at the end of last year, this is a remarkable development. This is especially true because, by all accounts, the state of the union is deplorable. The US is lacking behind in education, infrastructure and clean energy, unemployment remains high, and, not least, the skyrocketing federal deficit is posing a serious threat for America’s future; not to speak of the 500 billion debt owned by Beijing alone, a situation that is already provoking all kinds of apocalyptic forecasts in the press.
