When President Obama in his West Point speech announced the beginning of an American withdrawal from Afghanistan, few pundits took him seriously. The overwhelming majority within the security community in Washington saw his announcement to pull back the first troops by early July 2011 to be a mere domestic political maneuver, intended to mitigate concerns within his own Party.
